About our treatments work

Shade Studio in Long Branch carries smoothing and keratin treatments, bond building and detox services. Smoothing changes how your hair behaves day to day and lasts three to five months; bond treatments repair strength. Which one you need is decided at your appointment, not guessed from a menu.

Treatment is the widest word on our menu and it covers genuinely different problems, which is why picking one off a price list rarely goes well. Smoothing changes how your hair behaves: frizz, manageability, the hour you spend blow drying it. Bond building repairs internal strength after color. Detox strips out buildup from hard water, chlorine and product. Those are three different answers and only one of them is yours.

We are three blocks in from the ocean, so this is not theoretical here. Salt water, chlorine and shore humidity between June and September send more people to this part of the menu than any other time of year.

What to expect

We start by working out which problem you actually have. Bring the real complaint rather than the service name: hair that will not hold a blow dry, ends that snap, color that grabs unevenly and a scalp that feels coated are four different conversations.

Smoothing is applied section by section, processed and sealed with heat. It is not a quick appointment. Bond and detox treatments are shorter and often ride alongside a color service rather than needing their own visit.

You leave with specific aftercare, and for smoothing that includes an exact washing window. Follow it. The first few days do more than anything you do in month two.

Between appointments

Sulfate free shampoo is the whole game after a smoothing treatment. Sulfates strip it out faster than anything else you could do, and washing less often stretches it further.

Plenty of clients time a smoothing treatment to land just before summer, which is the right instinct on the shore.

Smoothing or a bond treatment, which do I need?

Different problems. Smoothing changes how your hair behaves day to day: frizz, manageability, blow dry time. A bond treatment repairs internal strength. If your hair feels damaged rather than unruly, the bond treatment is the honest answer and we will say so.

Will smoothing take my curl away?

Only if you want it to. Smoothing is a dial, not a switch. Most people here want the frizz gone and their blow dry halved while keeping their wave.

How long do treatments last?

Smoothing runs three to five months depending on which one and how often you wash. Bond and detox treatments are a service you repeat rather than something with an expiry.

Can I do a treatment the same day as color?

Often yes, and sometimes the order matters. Tell us what you want at booking so we plan the sequence properly rather than discovering the conflict on the day.

What is a detox treatment for?

Buildup. Hard water, chlorine, product and swimming all leave residue that makes hair feel coated and makes color grab unevenly. A detox strips that back before other work.

How soon can I wash after a smoothing treatment?

It depends which one. Your stylist gives you the exact window before you leave and it is worth following precisely. The first few days decide how long the whole thing lasts.
