About our cuts & styling work

Precision cutting and blowouts at Shade Studio in Long Branch, New Jersey, shaped around your texture and how much time you actually spend on your hair. Most clients are back every eight to twelve weeks. Pricing is on the service menu, and your stylist confirms it before anything starts.

A good cut is not a length, it is a shape that works with how your hair already behaves. That is why every cut here starts with the same three questions: what does your hair do on its own, how much time do you give it in the morning, and what have you been fighting with. The honest answer to the second one changes the cut more than anything else.

Megan came to us as a cutting specialist from Manhattan and built her book here from nothing, which happens when the work is good. Samantha works across precision cutting and lived in color, so if you are doing both in one visit the cut and the color get planned together rather than in sequence.

What to expect

We start dry, looking at how your hair actually falls before anything is washed. Wet hair lies about texture and lies about length, and a cut planned on wet hair is a cut that surprises you when it dries.

Then the cut itself, shaped section by section, checked as we go rather than at the end. If you are adding color, the two are planned together so the placement lands where the shape wants it.

You leave with a blowout and, if you want it, a walkthrough of how to get close to it at home with the tools you already own.

Between appointments

Most people are back every eight to twelve weeks. Shorter shapes need it sooner because the shape is the whole service. If your ends are healthy and you are growing length out, you can stretch it.

A heat protectant on every blow dry is the single cheapest thing you can do for your ends, and it is the one most people skip.

You can see cuts and finished blowouts on our Instagram, which is where the newest work lands first.

Questions we actually get asked

What happens in a cut consultation?

Your stylist looks at your texture, your density, how your hair grows and how much time you actually spend on it in the morning. That last one changes the cut more than anything else, so answer it honestly.

How often should I get a trim?

Most people are every eight to twelve weeks. Shorter shapes need it sooner because the shape is the whole point; long hair can stretch if the ends are healthy.

Can I get a blowout without a cut?

Yes. Plenty of clients book a blowout on its own before an event or just to start the week well.

Will you cut off more than I asked for?

No. We agree the length before scissors touch your hair, and if we think what you are asking for will not work with your texture we will say so first rather than after.

Do you cut curly and textured hair?

Yes. Tell us when you book so we can plan the time, and come with your hair in its natural state rather than straightened.

Do you do men's cuts or children's cuts?

Our chairs are focused on color, extensions and cutting for our regular clientele. If you are not sure whether we are the right fit, call the studio and we will tell you honestly.
