About our hair extensions work

Shade Studio in Long Branch, New Jersey fits hand tied invisible bead extensions and tape ins, with no glue and no heat touching your own hair. The owner is IBE and Bellami certified. Every extension service starts with a consultation and an in person color match, and move ups run every six to eight weeks.

Extensions are what this studio is best known for, and they are the reason a large part of the book travels in rather than shopping locally. Roughly half our clients drive down from Brooklyn. About forty percent of everyone we see comes from out of state. Almost all of them are here for hair.

Shauna is IBE certified and Bellami certified with eighteen years behind the chair. What that buys you is not the install, which plenty of people can do. It is the blend: cutting and shaping extensions into your own hair so the line where yours ends is not findable. That is the part that separates extensions that look like hair from extensions that look like extensions.

What to expect

It starts with a consultation, and this one is not a formality. We look at your density, your length and the condition of your ends, then match color in person under real light. Hair is ordered specifically for you, which is why a deposit is taken at that appointment rather than on install day.

Install day runs several hours. Rows go in, then everything is cut and blended into your own hair. Blending is craft, not a step, and it is where the eighteen years actually show up.

Then a move up every six to eight weeks, where the rows come down and get reset closer to the scalp. Book it before you leave. A late move up is the one thing that turns a gentle method into a damaging one.

Between appointments

Brush from the ends upward with a proper extension brush, never rip through from the root. Wash less often than you think with a sulfate free shampoo, keep conditioner off the rows themselves, and dry the tracks properly rather than going to bed damp.

If you are unsure whether a product you own is oil based, bring it in. Oil near a tape bond will loosen it.

Questions we actually get asked

Which method is right for me?

Invisible bead rows hold more weight and suit most people wanting real density. Tape ins sit flatter and often suit finer hair better. We tell you which at the consultation, including when the answer is the cheaper one.

Will extensions damage my hair?

Installed and maintained properly, no. What damages hair is leaving a row in past its move up, which puts tension on your own hair. Move ups every six to eight weeks are not optional.

Do I have to have a consultation first?

Always. We match color in person and order hair specifically for you, so this is never booked off a text message.

How long does the appointment take?

An install runs several hours. Move ups are shorter. We will give you the real number when we book it, and if you are driving in from out of state tell us so we can plan the day around your travel.

Can I still wear my hair up?

Yes. Rows are placed to stay hidden in a ponytail. Tell us at the consultation if you live in a high pony, because it changes where they go.

Do people really travel for this?

Constantly. Roughly half our clients drive down from Brooklyn and about forty percent of the whole book travels from out of state. Extensions are the single most common reason.
