Keratin Treatment vs Brazilian Blowout or a Gloss

Keratin, a Brazilian Blowout and a gloss get talked about as if they are the same idea. They are not. A smoothing service changes how your hair behaves in humidity and cuts your blow dry time. A gloss changes tone and shine and leaves frizz exactly where it is. Which smoothing service you get depends on your hair and how much wave you want to keep.

What does a smoothing treatment do to frizz?

A smoothing treatment settles frizz at the surface so your hair dries flatter and stays that way between washes. Frizz is your hair reacting to moisture in the air. We are in Long Branch, a few blocks in from the ocean, so moisture in the air is not a rare event around here.

Two things change fast, and one changes on purpose.

  • Frizz drops. The halo around your part and your hairline settles down.
  • Blow dry time drops. Most people notice this one first, on the first wash at home.
  • Your wave softens, and how much it softens is something we set with you at the consultation, not a fixed result.
  • Your natural texture underneath does not disappear. It just stops fighting you every morning.

The appointment runs in a set order. We wash first, always, because product on unwashed hair does not seat right. Then the smoothing solution goes on in sections and sits for a processing time that depends on the system and how much frizz we are pulling out. Fine hair usually needs less time under the solution than coarse or very dense hair, because fine strands take product faster. After that we blow dry it smooth, then a flat iron seals the solution into the hair shaft section by section. That flat iron pass is the step that actually locks the result in. Skip it or rush it and the treatment does not hold the way it should. Depending on your length and density, plan on your chair time running two to four hours for a full service.

Here is what a smoothing service does not do. It does not repair damage. It does not change your color. It does not make your hair straight forever. It fades out over time, and then you decide whether you want it again.

How is a Brazilian Blowout different from a keratin treatment?

They are different smoothing systems, and on our treatment menu they sit next to each other rather than against each other. Our smoothing list is Express Keratin Treatment, Brazilian Blowout, Silk Touch Plus, Trisola Tru Keratin and Jean De Pearl. Each one applies a little differently, and that difference is what should decide which one you book, not the name on the bottle alone.

Express Keratin Treatment. This is the lighter end of the menu. The solution goes on in thinner sections, and because it is a lighter formula we can usually move through your head faster. It settles frizz and cuts blow dry time without pulling much wave out, so if you like your curl pattern and just want it to behave, this is where we usually start. You wash it out at home once the waiting period we give you at checkout has passed.

Brazilian Blowout. This is a full smoothing service, applied section by section and sealed with the flat iron the same way as the rest of the full treatments, but the finish reads a little glossier than some of the others. Most clients wait to wash at home rather than washing same day, and we will tell you your exact window before you leave.

Silk Touch Plus. A full smoothing system that tends to leave a bit more root lift and movement than Brazilian Blowout on the same hair, which makes it a good fit if you want frizz gone but still want your hair to have some shape when you skip a blow dry. First wash timing follows the same at-home waiting window as our other full treatments.

Trisola Tru Keratin. Another full system, and the one we reach for most often when someone wants the strongest frizz control the menu offers while keeping some root volume. It goes through the same wash, apply, blow dry, seal order as every full service here. The aftercare line we send you home with is built to extend this specific system, so use what we give you rather than whatever shampoo is already in your shower.

Jean De Pearl. A full smoothing option we tend to place for finer or color-treated hair that still needs real frizz control, because it seats without weighing the hair down the way a heavier system can on fine strands. Same appointment order, same at-home first wash window as the rest of the full treatments.

What actually differs from one to the next is how much wave stays behind, how the finish looks and feels once it is dry, and which retail line keeps it going at home. We match your aftercare to whichever system we ran, so your shampoo and conditioner are not a guess. That is a five minute conversation at the consultation, not something you should have to figure out on your own.

  • Express Keratin Treatment. How it seats: Lighter formula, faster application. First wash: At home, after your waiting window. Wave left behind: Most of your natural wave stays.
  • Brazilian Blowout. How it seats: Full application, flat iron sealed. First wash: At home, after your waiting window. Wave left behind: Softened, glossier finish.
  • Silk Touch Plus. How it seats: Full application, flat iron sealed. First wash: At home, after your waiting window. Wave left behind: Softened, keeps more root lift.
  • Trisola Tru Keratin. How it seats: Full application, flat iron sealed. First wash: At home, after your waiting window. Wave left behind: Strongest frizz control, some root volume.
  • Jean De Pearl. How it seats: Full application, flat iron sealed. First wash: At home, after your waiting window. Wave left behind: Softened, lighter feel on fine hair.

If you want the shorter version of the lighter end of this comparison, the express keratin or full treatment breakdown covers that specific choice in more detail.

Where does a gloss fit if my problem is frizz?

A gloss is a tone and shine service. It closes down the surface so light bounces better, and hair that reflects light looks smoother in a photo. It does not change how your hair behaves when the air gets damp.

So a gloss is the right call when your complaint is dull, warm or uneven. It is the wrong call when your complaint is a frizz halo by noon. Plenty of people book both, at different visits, for different reasons. A gloss rides along with most of our blonding and highlight services for exactly this reason. It finishes tone.

If you have been told a gloss will fix frizz, that is where the confusion starts. It will make your hair look glassier the day you get it. Then you wash it, the air is thick, and the frizz is still yours.

Which smoothing service fits my hair type?

Start from what you want to change, not from the service name. That is how we run the conversation in the chair. With eighteen years behind the chair, we have a good sense of where to start before we even touch a strand, but your hair still gets its own consultation every time.

  • Less frizz, keep my wave. Where we usually start: Express Keratin Treatment. What changes: Frizz and blow dry time. What stays: Most of your wave and movement.
  • Less frizz, less wave, longer hold. Where we usually start: A full service (Brazilian Blowout, Silk Touch Plus, Trisola Tru Keratin, Jean De Pearl). What changes: Frizz, wave and drying time. What stays: Your length and your color.
  • Shine and tone, texture untouched. Where we usually start: A gloss. What changes: Tone, warmth and shine. What stays: Frizz, exactly as it is now.
  • Not sure, hair has been through a lot. Where we usually start: Consultation, then a treatment plan. What changes: The plan comes first. What stays: Nothing until we have looked at it in person.

Before we say yes to any of these, we check a few things. How porous is the hair, meaning how fast it takes and holds product. How dense is it, section by section, not just at a glance. And what has it already been through this year, color, other smoothing services, extensions. That check is what decides the processing time and the strength we set, not a chart.

Fine hair usually needs a lighter hand. Too much smoothing on fine hair reads as flat rather than sleek, and that is one of the more common corrections we make on a second visit, easing a client off a setting that was too strong for their density the first time. Coarse, dense hair can take more and often wants more. Curly hair is its own conversation, because there is a point where you stop having curl at all, and you should choose that on purpose rather than find out in the mirror.

Our full smoothing service page lists what we run, and the Service Menu has current pricing. The consultation sets your exact plan.

How long does smoothing hold before it fades out?

Smoothing fades. It does not grow out with a hard line the way a root does, which is one of the nicer things about it. You get a slow return of frizz rather than a stripe.

How long the hold lasts comes down to four things.

  1. Which service you had and how we set it. A lighter service like Express Keratin fades sooner than a full service, simply because it did less to begin with.
  2. Your hair itself. Porosity and density both affect how long a treated shaft holds its new shape.
  3. How often you wash, and what you wash with. A sulfate heavy shampoo strips a smoothing service faster than daily washing alone would.
  4. What your hair spends the summer sitting in.

Number four matters more here than it would twenty miles inland. Salt water, pool chlorine and long sun days all shorten a smoothing service. If you swim most of the summer, plan on a shorter run and budget for it, rather than being annoyed later. We wrote up how shore humidity and smoothing interact if you want that in full.

We will give you a realistic window for your hair at the consultation. It is a range, not a date, and we would rather give you the honest version than oversell a number.

Will smoothing work with my color or my extensions?

Usually yes, but the order matters, so tell us before you book. Color and smoothing get sequenced at the consultation so one does not undo the other.

A few situations that come up weekly:

  • You are mid color correction. We would rather finish the correction plan first. Color corrections take more than one visit, and adding a smoothing service into the middle of one makes the plan harder to steer.
  • You are a monthly root retouch client. Say so. We can build smoothing into your calendar instead of stacking it onto an already long day.
  • You wear IBE extensions. Our IBE hair extensions sit on a beaded track, and your move up runs on its own schedule. Smoothing around that schedule is a planning conversation, not a same day decision. Bring it up at your next move up.
  • You are blonde and the ends are fragile. We will talk about whether a bond treatment belongs in the plan first. That is a different service doing a different job.
  • You just had a gloss. Smoothing can sit after a gloss without a problem, but tell us the gloss happened so we can pick a system that will not strip it early.

Consultation first. That is not a formality on smoothing, and it is not optional on extensions or any big color change.

What do people get wrong about smoothing treatments?

The mistakes are consistent, and each one has a real cost attached.

Expecting dead straight. Most smoothing services are not built to make curly hair pin straight in one visit, and we would not aim there without talking to you first. What it costs you: you sit down disappointed in a service that did exactly what it was supposed to do.

Booking it two days before a wedding or a flight. The first stretch after a smoothing service is the fragile part. What it costs you: no cushion. Give yourself room and read the first 72 hours guide before you pick a date.

Clipping it up, tying it back or washing it early. What it costs you: dents you can see and a treatment that fades sooner than it had to.

Buying a random shampoo on the way home. What it costs you: weeks off the back end of a service you already paid for. We keep the matching lines on hand so this one is easy to avoid.

Treating smoothing as damage repair. It is not. If your ends are chewed up, that is a different conversation, one about repair, not smoothness. What it costs you: you spend a smoothing appointment on a problem smoothing does not solve.

Skipping the consultation because you had one somewhere else. Your hair today is not your hair from two years ago. What it costs you: the wrong strength on hair that will carry it for months.

Smoothing service questions, answered

Can I keep some of my wave and still lose the frizz? Yes, and this is the most common request we get. We set the service lighter, take the frizz down, and leave the movement. Your hair still bends. It stops puffing.

How much blow dry time does a smoothing treatment save? We will not put a fixed number on it, because it depends on your density, your length and how hard your wave was fighting the brush before. What we can tell you is the pattern: the hair gives up faster, the brush moves through with less resistance, and you stop chasing the same section over and over.

Do I book my color before or after smoothing? Bring it up before either one is on the calendar. Some color work sits better ahead of a smoothing service and some sits better after, depending on what we are doing to your color. This is a two minute conversation at the consultation that saves a wasted appointment later, so please do not book blind.

Is a Brazilian Blowout the same thing as a keratin treatment? No. They are different smoothing systems with different finishes and different aftercare, and they both live on our menu. The practical question is not which brand, it is how much frizz control you want and how much wave you want to keep. We pick from there.

Does a gloss do anything for frizz? Not in the way you want it to. A gloss adds shine and corrects tone, so hair looks smoother and richer. It does not change how your hair reacts to damp air. If frizz is the actual complaint, a gloss is a nice add on to a smoothing plan, not a replacement for one.

How do you decide which smoothing service I get? We look at your hair in person, feel the density, look at how much wave you have and how it behaves, and ask what you want your wash days to look like. Photos help. So does telling us what you did not like about a smoothing service you had somewhere else.

Do smoothing treatments need a consultation first? We want eyes on your hair before we set the strength, especially if you are blonde, mid correction, or wearing extensions. For a lot of people that conversation happens at the start of the visit. For hair with more history, we would rather see you first and book the service after.
